ARTVIN
Artvin is in the east of the
Blacksea, near Coruh River.
For along periods it stayed
under the rule of the Pontus
Kingdom. In 1878 after the
Berlin agreement the Ottoman
Empire took over the power.
There are several historical
places especially the
castles such as Artvin,
Ardanuc and Savsat which
were built on the sharp
rocks. The churches 6 km far
from the Savsat are Yusufeli
Ishan, Rabak, Tekkale and
Cevizli. These churches are
still in good condition.
Apart from these the
churches which were built by
Georgians in the IX.-X.
centuries, such as
Altıparmak, Bulanık, Dört
Hamamlı, Köprülü are also in
the city. Hot springs:
Ciskaro, Ilıca Cermigi,
Otinga Cermigi, Zeytinlik
Cermigi are all here in the
city. Famous caves such as
Ardanuc, Sasaz and Kale
makes Artvin a well know
city. Today Plateau tourism
and rafting brings tourists.
For examole Kafkas plateau
which is 1200 meters high is
famous for climbing and bull
wrestling. Cehennem Deresi
Canyon is second to the
Colorado Canyon.
RIVER CORUH
This river runs into the
Blacksea from the Kackar
mountains. It is ideal for
winter sports, especially
for rafting. According to
the rafters it is hardship
rises up to 5 degrees. From
August to May it is called
white water rafting. Naional
races between
Bayburt-Yusufeli-Oltu and
weekly expeditions are held
here. Tourism agencies

Geographical Position
The surface area of Turkey is divided by the Dardanelles, the sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus. In the west, Turkey has boundaries with Greece (212km) and Bulgaria (269km). In the east and south east, Turkey has boundaries with four countries: The Soviet Union (610km) , Iran (454km), Iraq (331km), and Syria (870km). Geographically, Turkey is a land-bridge between Europe and Asia.
The european section of Turkey is a fertile hilly land. The Asian part of Turkey consist of an inner high plateau (1000m) with mountain ranges along the north and south coasts. The plaeau extends from the west to the Aegean coast, with many river valleys.
The western part is the most fertile section of the country. In eastern Turkey, the northern Pontus Mountains meet with the southern Taurus Mountains and from here the 1800m high Anatolian plateau. From this plateau rise the particularly high Vulkan Mountains over 3000m, while further south is the 5165m high Mount Ararat, the highest mountain in the country.
