IZMIR
It was established in 3000 B.C. in
Bayraklı. Ancient name of Izmir is
''Zumurna''. According to a myth the
city got the name ''zümürne'' from
an Amazon called Smyrna. Izmir was
under Greek occupation in 1919 for 3

September 1922. Afair organized
between 20 August and 20 September
every year gives a special color to
the city.
IZMIR CLOCK TOWER
It was built by Kucuk Sait Pasha in
1901 as a present to II. Abdulhamit
for the 25th anniversary of his
coronation. It cost 750 gold coins.
FOÇA
It is a fisherman village being
situated 68km. northwest of Izmir.
Mainly attracts the local
vacationers mostly the people living
in Izmir offering beautiful beaches
and attractive sea shores.
PERGAMON
The name of this famous ancient city
cames from a hero called Pergamos.
This region was ruled by Lydians the
VII. century B.C. by Byzantines
between 395-1306 and Turks after
1306. Many excavations wre made
between 1927-1938 and many
historical remains brought to light.

Dionynos Temple, Greel godess Hera
Temple, gates and walls belonging to
Hellenistic times are some of the
historical remains found in
excavations.
ACROPOL
It is on a hill, north of Bergama.
It was brought light in the
excavations between 1878-1886.
ATHENA TEMPLE
It is the oldest temole of Bergama.
PERGAMON LIBRARY
It was the rishest library of
ancient times with approximately
200.000 books. After the fire most
of the books were stolen and given
to Kleopatra as gifts. Today only
foundations of this building exists.
PERGAMON AMPHITHEATER
It was built on the sleep slope of
the Acropolis and it was built by
carving the side of the mountain. It
has a capacity of 15.000 people and
It is 46m. in height. There are 80
lines odsits and it is the theater
of the world. It is on a 42.000 m2
area.
PERGAMON ALTAR OF ZEUS
It is on left of the entrence of the
Acropol and it was built in the
times of the 2. Eumenes in memory of
their victory against the galateans.
ASKLEPION
It was established on the site where
the holy waters existed in the 4.
century B.C. and dedicated to the
god of medicine. Asklepies and used
as a health center for Asklepies.
People were treated with herbal
medicines, sports, entertainment and
clay baths. People who geywell
offered sacrifices to asklepion.
Tosay, only the base columns exist.
SIGACIK (TEOS)
It is 8 km.west of seferihisar. The
city had gone thgrough Hellenistic
and Roman times. Teosians were very
good at sea trade. Their luxurious
life atracted attention. The theatre
build in the II. century B.C. and
the biggest temple are the most
important buildings of the city. The
items belonging to the temple are
exhibited in the Iznik Museum.

Geographical Position
The surface area of Turkey is divided by the Dardanelles, the sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus. In the west, Turkey has boundaries with Greece (212km) and Bulgaria (269km). In the east and south east, Turkey has boundaries with four countries: The Soviet Union (610km) , Iran (454km), Iraq (331km), and Syria (870km). Geographically, Turkey is a land-bridge between Europe and Asia.
The european section of Turkey is a fertile hilly land. The Asian part of Turkey consist of an inner high plateau (1000m) with mountain ranges along the north and south coasts. The plaeau extends from the west to the Aegean coast, with many river valleys.
The western part is the most fertile section of the country. In eastern Turkey, the northern Pontus Mountains meet with the southern Taurus Mountains and from here the 1800m high Anatolian plateau. From this plateau rise the particularly high Vulkan Mountains over 3000m, while further south is the 5165m high Mount Ararat, the highest mountain in the country.
